How can I address the security risks of the LastPass Helper on Mac?

The LastPass Helper is the equivalent of the "binary" component, used to support Safari in the same way we support other browsers with our binary version. It's an application that is installed by the universal Mac installer. Our Safari extension can then locally "talk" to the Helper. Like the binary component, the Helper supports additional features and functionality for power users, including autologoff on browser close, fingerprint authentication, attachments, the copy username and copy password buttons, and more

Security researchers have shown there to be some security weaknesses in this model. Until recently, though, this was the only method for supporting this additional functionality in Safari.

Recently, Apple introduced alternative methods for us to offer this functionality to LastPass users called "Safari App Extensions," and we're working to make the appropriate changes. This development is ongoing as we evaluate the new options and work to transition to this new model. We will have a preference for native messaging on Chrome and Safari. Because this is a significant change to inter-process communication, we do not yet have an ETA for delivery but will keep our community updated.

We believe the risk is generally low, but for users who are concerned you can disable the LastPass Helper by running the Mac uninstaller (https://lastpass.com/lpmacosx.zip). Removing the Helper will simply remove those added features in Safari, but will otherwise not impact the performance of LastPass in Safari.
