I am getting the error message 'ERROR - No private key. Cannot decrypt pending shares'. What does this mean?

If you see the error message as below:


ERROR - No private key. Cannot decrypt pending shares


This means that your Sharing Key was likely corrupted. The Sharing Key needs to be deleted and recreated.

The key can only be deleted by LastPass support. Before deletion, please do the following in preparation:

  1. Remove yourself from any Shared Folders

    • Ask an Admin of the Shared Folder to remove you

    • If you are the only Admin to the Shared Folder, set another user as an Admin (for now) and have them remove you

    • If you, or the affected user(s) are member(s) of a User Group, remove the account(s) from those User Group(s).
    • If you are the only user in the Shared Folder, relocate the items to a non-shared folder, then delete and purge the folder. To delete the folder, go to Manage Shared Folders > Delete. To purge the folder, go to Manage Shared Folders > check the 'View Deleted Shared Folders' box > Purge.

  2. If you are an Enterprise user and linked your Personal Account, unlink it.

  3. If you received this error while trying to share with another user, please remove them from any Shared Folders as well using the same advice in step 1. 

  4. Make sure nothing is listed in Manage Shared Folders and you have also purged all deleted folders.

  5. Contact LastPass support by submitting a support ticket with this error message and the email address of the user you are trying to share with to recreate the Sharing Key. LastPass support will help you recreate the Sharing Key.

  6. Once your Sharing Key is recreated, you can reshare any shared items
