What is the LastPass master password?

The "master password" is the password that you create for your LastPass account. When you sign up for LastPass you will be prompted to create a master password. When you login to LastPass, you need an email address and your master password to access your account.

It's very important that you:

1) Create a strong master password.

2) Do not forget your master password.

When it comes to securing your vault, it's very important that your password is long and unique. Although there are many layers of encryption and security we put in place to keep your data safe, using a strong master password will not only protect you from brute-force attacks but will also ensure that a breach at another random website won't affect your LastPass account. For more advice on creating a strong master password, or "passphrase", see our article here. There is no limit on how many characters you can use for the master password.

Never, ever use the LastPass master password for any other account or app. Your LastPass master password should be for LastPass only.

Practice logging in with your master password several times to commit it to memory.

LastPass never has your master password. Therefore, it's critical that you remember your master password. If you forget your master password, the options for recovering access to your account are limited. Unlike other websites, because LastPass never stores your master password, we cannot ever send it to you, reset it for you, or look it up for you. We simply don't have it, and there's no way around that!

If you forget your master password, carefully follow the steps for account recovery

Please note:

Account recovery can only be performed on a computer where you have previously used LastPass. If you reinstalled your operating system, or are on a new computer, account recovery will not work.

Using the "remember password" option increases the chance of forgetting your master password. We recommend that you do not use this option so that you continue to enter your master password and commit it to memory.
