Comparing the convenience of LastPass to 1Password

When it comes to comparing password manager features and capabilities, LastPass and 1Password offer a lot of the same functionality. For example, both provide an encrypted vault and admin console. Both have username and password generators. Both offer auto-saving and autofill capabilities. Both provide various master password and passwordless options for logging in to the vault.

LastPass also prides itself on its convenience, intuitive features, smooth user experience, and powerful admin and super admin features. The LastPass password manager was built to provide seamless adoption, from setup to usage to management, for virtually anyone – from the tech novice small business owner to the tech native running the IT department and everyone in between.

LastPass' UX was more solid than 1Passwords'... The sharing capabilities, both in the vault and in the admin panel, were both really good from LastPass. The ease of setting up SAML and managing single sign-on through Google, at least in the demos that I received from both parties, was made easier with LastPass.

Our ongoing commitment to security

Over the past two years, LastPass has transformed significantly. We completed our separation from GoTo and are now operating as an independent company with a new management team, entirely new modernized cloud-based infrastructure, systems and tools as well as a fully dedicated Trust and Security team. In connection with this separation, LastPass has taken several steps to further modernize and harden our infrastructure.

In the process of becoming a standalone company, we seized the opportunity to re-imagine and build a new LastPass from the ground up, delivering a new cloud-native infrastructure that allows LastPass to better provide the security, privacy, and innovation our customers expect and deserve.

Specifically, within the LastPass product suite, we have enhanced security and privacy within our digital vault. We have also implemented stronger policies, access controls, and ongoing employee training to better secure our assets and information, as well as that of our customers, and we recently became the first password management company to achieve ISO 27701 compliance for data privacy.

We have also invested significant resources to strengthen our privacy and security teams. We've established new business units, such as our Privacy Operations, Safety and Trust (POST) team, which focuses on safeguarding customer privacy and protecting against fraud and abuse. Additionally, our new Threat Intelligence, Mitigation, and Escalation (TIME) team provides actionable security insights and advanced threat intelligence on LastPass Labs, our content hub for the market and our customers.

When it comes to security, some of LastPass’ highlights include:

  • Master password exposure protection: When a user creates or resets a master password, LastPass will check to see if the selected password has ever been exposed in a breach. Users will be alerted if the password chosen has been exposed and must choose a new master password to proceed.
  • Key management and rotation: LastPass supports ongoing security with key management and rotation features, helping customers stay resilient against potential threats over time.
  • Threat intelligence: LastPass has a dedicated in-house threat intelligence team that continuously monitors and addresses risks, providing actionable security insights to help keep customers protected from evolving cyber threats.
  • FIDO2-server certification: LastPass was the first password manager to achieve FIDO2 certification of its servers, helping to provide strong, passwordless authentication for secure, seamless logins.
  • Compliance with well-known security standards and frameworks: LastPass has built a security-focused culture into every aspect of our teams, processes, strategy, and product. We regularly conduct third-party security audits and test our controls against industry standard security frameworks. LastPass holds several well-known third-party security certifications including ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC2 Type II, SOC3, BSI C5, and TRUSTe. Completing and maintaining these standards is just one way we demonstrate our commitment to data security, safeguarding of information, and service availability.

LastPass vs. 1Password pricing

At a glance, pricing for leading password managers can seem comparable, but when you dig into the details, LastPass arguably offers more value for your money by providing flexible options and enhanced features at every tier, without the need for costly upgrades.

LastPass differentiators include:

  • Admin policies for Teams license: LastPass offers 25 customizable admin policies for Teams customers, empowering better management, security, and control for a tailored experience.

  • Teams licenses: LastPass's Teams package supports up to 50 users, offering more flexibility for growing teams.

The final verdict: LastPass vs. 1Password

LastPass is a very pretty platform. It's straightforward, and we liked ease of use too. It's just an extension that you log in to. It was what we were looking for. I wanted everyone to have SSO or MFA in at the start of the day and then they're authenticated. We work in the office, we don't work from home, so we don't move around, we're all there. Once they're authenticated, they're just good to go for the rest of the day, and it is a bit of a time saver.
