Frequently asked questions

How does LastPass differ from iCloud Keychain?

MacOS devices feature a built-in password manager, iCloud Keychain. While convenient for Safari users, Keychain has it’s limitations.

LastPass provides users with a standalone password manager that prioritizes security and ease of use. With LastPass, you get enhanced security features like dark web monitoring and advanced multifactor authentication (MFA) options. You’re also not limited just to Safari and Apple devices: you can access your LastPass vault across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Windows and Android devices, and more.

How do I switch from iCloud Keychain to LastPass?

  • Download the LastPass Safari extension and log in.
  • In Safari, click on the top right corner of your browser. Open up Preferences and click Passwords.
  • Copy and paste your saved logins over to your LastPass vault.
  • Once you’ve transferred your passwords, open System Preferences and click on iCloud. Once there, uncheck Keychain. Enter your Apple ID and complete the instructions to set up LastPass for autofill.

Do I need a password manager for Safari?

When you have 100s of online accounts, you have 100s of passwords to manage. Memorizing 100s of unique passwords is near impossible, so it’s unsurprising a significant number of people reuse weak, easy-to-remember passwords. But password reuse is a serious problem: it leaves your digital life at risk to data breaches and bad actors.

A password manager like LastPass handles password memorization for you, making it easy to protect your digital life. With LastPass, you can generate strong, unique passwords every time you create a new account and instantly save it to your password vault. Once saved, it’s immediately available across all your trusted devices and ready for autofill.
